We make diversity a force for development

Interdisciplinary Network for Special and Intercultural Education

Opening pathways for equitable participation for all.

A few words about us

Interdisciplinary Network for Special and Intercultural Education:

We are a team committed to addressing and actively countering social exclusion.

Our team brings together scientists, researchers, academics, educators, mental health professionals, and parents of individuals with disabilities, forming a transdisciplinary community of practice grounded in inclusive and participatory approaches.

We design and implement inclusive practices and evidence-informed tools that promote equitable participation across all domains of social life, ensuring access, engagement, and meaningful progress for all learners and participants in education, technology, and sport. Our work is aligned with principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiated instruction, and strengths-based, person-centred approaches.

For us, progress has no meaning unless it is inclusive of everyone.

Diversity is not an obstacle to progress; it is a core mechanism of evolution across biological, social, cultural, and educational domains. Development emerges through variability, the coexistence of different characteristics, experiences, cognitive styles, and modes of interaction. In nature, biodiversity ensures adaptability and species survival. In society, the encounter of different cultures, perspectives, and identities fosters creativity, innovation, and the expansion of human thought.

In education, diversity functions as a dynamic driver of learning. The presence of learners with diverse needs, abilities, linguistic backgrounds, and cultural experiences transforms the classroom into a community of interaction and collaboration. Inclusive education does not aim at uniformity but at recognising and leveraging each individual’s uniqueness as a source of knowledge and collective development. Through coexistence, learners cultivate empathy, social competence, critical thinking, and respect for human diversity.

Human history consistently demonstrates that major transformations emerge from difference—through individuals and groups who challenge assumptions and introduce new perspectives. Progress is not produced through repetition of the same, but through the productive interaction between difference and novelty. Diversity, therefore, is not merely a characteristic of society; it is a fundamental driver of human development, innovation, and evolution (Nanos, 2013, 2021; Soulis, 2013).
